Village Voice names Soho Rep Best 2015 Off-Broadway Theater

Soho Rep.is tiny in size but not in stature. It only does three productions a year, but artistic director Sarah Benson has led this scrappy outfit to breakthroughs, taking risks on progressive directors and playwrights like Jackie Sibblies Drury, Lucas Hnath, and the Nature Theater of Oklahoma. Whether we're listening to a play through headphones (Anne Washburn's10 Out of 12), hallucinating nineteenth-century melodrama (Branden Jacobs-Jenkins'sAn Octoroon), or mourning Africa's AIDS casualties while surrounded by a choir (Debbie Tucker Green'sGenerations), Soho Rep. invites audiences to leap beyond the normal limits of theater. With a bigger space, more seats, and larger coffers, this company could compete with any in the world; for drama-addicted New Yorkers, it's the most reliably inventive supplier in town.

“The dramatic literature from every country, beginning with Greece, is our heritage. It is not to be read; it is to be seen on stage. Most Americans know little of it. This is our challenge, our duty, and our mission in life to bring live theatre to our city and country at a price which families can afford.”
