Tectonic Theatre Project

Year(s) Awarded: Grant Recipients

Tectonic Theater Project is dedicated to developing innovative works that explore theatrical language and form, fostering an artistic dialogue with our audiences on the social, political and human issues that affect us all. In service to this goal, Tectonic supports readings, workshops, full productions, and training for students in our playmaking techniques.

Founded in 1991 and fueled by the vision of Artistic Director Moiss Kaufman, Tectonic has built a solid foundation as a prestigious world-class theater company and a valued part of New York City's cultural life. Through our activities, we serve a broad and diverse community of artists and audiences. Tectonic Theater believes artistic and cultural expression allows us to share history, struggles, values and perspective. We engage with our artists and audiences through developing and producing new plays and in turn, create discourse and debate on the political, cultural and social issues of the day. Much of our work has a focus on issues of concern to the LGBT community, and works in process are now expanding our reach. We strive to initiate, participate in, and sustain national conversation(s) through our plays and the education and community engagement elements inspired by the work.

“The dramatic literature from every country, beginning with Greece, is our heritage. It is not to be read; it is to be seen on stage. Most Americans know little of it. This is our challenge, our duty, and our mission in life to bring live theatre to our city and country at a price which families can afford.”
